Mar 19, 2020 Season 1 Episode 6
Marcus Walfridson

This session is a masterclass for young coaches who want to coach at the top level. Johnathan is the youngest coach ever to be named manager of an international team as he was when taking over Sierra Leone at age 27. Currently he is coaching the Uganda national team that are vying their first ever World Cup appearance.

The route for Johnathan to arrive at the top level was an unusual one. In our conversation he expands on how and why he choose the route he did. How looking 15-20 years ahead in time has helped his personal and professional development. Having coached in 9 countries on 4 different continents he has at a young age amassed a lot of experience.

Some of the things we talk about in this amazing episode is the long term perspective, how and what to prioritize when you come into a new culture,  the attention span of players in different cultures and how to distill the complexity of the game to a simple message.

I first met Johnathan in Amsterdam at a coaching course where we had some great conversations which lead to me following his career. The openness and information he brings to this conversation is truly incredible. Be prepared to take notes if you are a football/soccer coach who wants to coach in the pros!
